Female Amateur Athlete of the Year 2002

Carly Gullickson

At age 14, Carly Gullickson has accomplished more at the high levels of tennis than most players achieve in a lifetime.

During the 2001 season, Gullickson was a singles finalist in six major USTA tournaments...in the 18 and under division.

The Brentwood, Tennessee standout began the 2001 season finishing fifth in the Winter Super National Championships in Phoenix, where she was honored by winning the Sportsmanship Award.

She followed that by winning the Copper Bowl title in Tucson in January. In February, she continued her winning ways, capturing the K-Swiss Indoor Championships in Chicago.

She left the hardcourts and demonstrated flexibility beyond her years by winning the Florida Busch Open by upsetting the #2 player in the U.S. at that time. In Memphis in July, Gullickson captured the USTA Super National Clay Courts with the loss of only one set, and became the youngest player, at age 14, to win the tournament since Jennifer Capriati.

Not satisfied with winning outdoors on hard courts, indoors on hard courts, and outdoors on clay, Gullickson demonstrated her versatility by winning the International Junior Grass Court Championships in Philadelphia...again with the loss of only one set. Her success earned her a wild card in the qualifying of the U.S. Open Women's Championships, as well as a spot in the main draw of the U.S. Open Junior Championships.

She ended the year in the Top 100 juniors in the world in the 18 and under division. And she accomplished all this at age 14.
