Last March, the University of Tennessee Lady Vols Indoor Track
team became the reigning 2005 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Champions.
It is the first non-basketball NCAA title for the women's athletic
department, giving the Lady Vol family a new addition to the
six trophies that Pat Summitt's hoops squads have earned over
the years.
The team
carried the number-one ranking all season. ''This was our
goal and we knew it was attainable," said Coach J. J.
Clark. ''The media thought so, too, because they ranked us
number one at the beginning of the season and coming into
this meet. But, it is very hard to carry that ranking through
the season, and then end it with a championship. Very few
teams do that. It just shows a lot of character on the part
of our team."
The NCAA
national title was certainly a team effort. The Lady Vols
went in with 10 athletes and every one of them left the tournament
an All-American. (Tennessee finished the meet with all 10
athletes earning a total of 17 All-America honors.) The Lady
Vols also won their first 2005 SEC Indoor title in 21 years.
